This was filmed at Type Books on Queen West, one of my favorite indie bookstores in Toronto. I’ll have to make the time to stop by this weekend and pick up a new book or two, to show my appreciation for them allowing the filmmakers after-hours access to the shop*!

* – I say this despite having gotten a whole new stack of lovely books for Christmas, along with an e-reader which I’m excited to try out. Good thing I also have a new bookshelf!

My friend Chris is helping organize a fantastic fundraiser next month, Toronto Draws Tintin. Sponsored by The Beguiling Books & Art, Steamwhistle Brewery, and the French Consulate in Toronto, the event will feature a month-long exhibit of artwork by local Toronto creators, each piece paying tribute to the classic adventurer Tintin and his creator, Herge.

The gallery opening is on Wednesday November 2nd, from 7pm-10pm; the exhibit will close on Sunday, November 27th from 7 pm – 11pm with a Silent Auction and Tintin discussion featuring Stanislas, illustrator of the upcoming biography The Adventures of Herge. Funds raised by the exhibit and auction will go to support the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund. If you happen to be in Toronto during November, it’s definitely going to be an exhibit worth checking out!

There’s still time to get into the show if you’re a professional illustrator or comics creator who lives in (or has lived in) Toronto – submissions will be accepted until October 31, and this post includes details on how to get the submission guidelines (right at the bottom).

Kalamari Kastle has a run-down of the h.naoto fashion show that took place recently in San Francisco, CA as part of the J-Pop Fashion Summit. h.naoto is opening an outlet in the New People store, which already houses Baby the Stars Shine Bright and several other Japanese street fashion brands, and the main designer himself, Naoto Hirooka, was on hand to present his work and discuss his inspiration. Sounds like an awesome event, and I only wish the coverage included more specific details about that conversation.

I’m not too sure about the antler hair, and baggy-crotch pants will never be my thing, but the rest of the looks are pretty awesome, in that oh hai, I just survived the apocalypse and came out looking fabulous sort of way that Japanese goth designers do so well.

From the artist statement:

I began to photograph these dancers as everyday people. In the photographs they are away from the stage, yet they cannot leave dance behind. As they go about their daily routines, they do so as dancers. This speaks to the power of a passionate life; if you’re fully invested in something, it is always with you.

Some very cool designs from Unique Art Pendants on Etsy – their work is much more creative than their store name!

Ouija Board wrist cuff. Ideal for mediums on the go, or whenever you might have an unexpected need to communicate with the dead.

Zoltar the Fortune Teller pendant, complete with miniature fortunes to hand out! The designer sells replacement fortunes, although you could also have fun coming up with your own horrible predictions.

They also have a series of octupus, tentacled and other squidly designs, like pretty much every other indie designer these days. (which is not to disparage our future cephalopod overlords, just that the whole tentacle trend is feeling a bit overdone these days.)
