This was filmed at Type Books on Queen West, one of my favorite indie bookstores in Toronto. I’ll have to make the time to stop by this weekend and pick up a new book or two, to show my appreciation for them allowing the filmmakers after-hours access to the shop*!

* – I say this despite having gotten a whole new stack of lovely books for Christmas, along with an e-reader which I’m excited to try out. Good thing I also have a new bookshelf!

The gallery opening is on Wednesday November 2nd, from 7pm-10pm; the exhibit will close on Sunday, November 27th from 7 pm – 11pm with a Silent Auction and Tintin discussion featuring Stanislas, illustrator of the upcoming biography The Adventures of Herge. Funds raised by the exhibit and auction will go to support the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund. If you happen to be in Toronto during November, it’s definitely going to be an exhibit worth checking out!

There’s still time to get into the show if you’re a professional illustrator or comics creator who lives in (or has lived in) Toronto – submissions will be accepted until October 31, and this post includes details on how to get the submission guidelines (right at the bottom).

This fantastic piece of work – a map to the dreamlands of H.P. Lovecraft – is the brainchild of Jason Thompson, a comic artist and Eisner-nominated author (also, someone who has slept in my guest bedroom). The image is part of Jason’s promo work for his latest Kickstarter project, which aims to build up funding for a comics project inspired by Lovecraft’s only full-length novel, The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath. I’m not too sure about the antler hair, and baggy-crotch pants will never be my thing, but the rest of the looks are pretty awesome, in that oh hai, I just survived the apocalypse and came out looking fabulous sort of way that Japanese goth designers do so well.

Perhaps my favorite outfit from the ones shown - Kalamari Kastle has a larger slideshow demonstrating the range of looks presented.

I began to photograph these dancers as everyday people. In the photographs they are away from the stage, yet they cannot leave dance behind. As they go about their daily routines, they do so as dancers. This speaks to the power of a passionate life; if you’re fully invested in something, it is always with you.

Sayaka Kajita Ganz makes art from the debris of industrial society. In her words,

For my sculptures I use plastic utensils, toys and metal pieces among other things. I only select objects that have been used and discarded. The human history behind these objects gives them life in my eyes. My goal is for each object to transcend its origins by being integrated into an animal form that seems alive. This process of reclamation and regeneration is liberating to me as an artist.

Zoltar the Fortune Teller pendant, complete with miniature fortunes to hand out! The designer sells replacement fortunes, although you could also have fun coming up with your own horrible predictions.

They also have a series of octupus, tentacled and other squidly designs, like pretty much every other indie designer these days. (which is not to disparage our future cephalopod overlords, just that the whole tentacle trend is feeling a bit overdone these days.)
