Charming Monsters

My friend Derek has one of those awkward, almost-a-holiday birthday – late October, close enough that it’s eaasy to be overshadowed by Halloween events. Lucky for Derek, he’s also a fan of terrible horror films, so every year he hosts a themed party at his North York condo where he shares his favorite bad movies with the rest of us. This year’s selections included PUMPKINHEAD (better than expected, though expectations were low) and THE UNBORN (one of those fascinating films where it sounds like it should work, but the execution falls completely flat).

As is often the case, I decided to contribute cupcakes:

Simple Devil’s Food cupcakes (yes, from a box recipe) decorated with Halloween-themed sprinkles. The ones with all the eyes went over the best!

This fantastic piece of work – a map to the dreamlands of H.P. Lovecraft – is the brainchild of Jason Thompson, a comic artist and Eisner-nominated author (also, someone who has slept in my guest bedroom). The image is part of Jason’s promo work for his latest Kickstarter project, which aims to build up funding for a comics project inspired by Lovecraft’s only full-length novel, The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath.
