Couch-to-5K

As mentioned on Twitter, I completed my final run for the Couch-to-5K program last Sunday morning, with a solid 5 km (3.1 miles) in 30 minutes flat, just under 10 minutes/mile. Not bad for a total beginner, which I was when I started the program in mid-June. It’s taken me 11 weeks to complete the 9-week program (I missed a week with San Diego Comic Con, and then repeated a week to catch up on my training), but that means in just under 3 months I’ve gone from being unable to handle a five-minute jog to running for half an hour without breaking stride. Not bad!

If you’ve been thinking about getting into running, I highly recommend the program, which is available online here for free!

My total start-up cost was about $250 for good shoes and a running bra; I’m going to have to add gym membership to that once there’s ice on the ground, but that’s (hopefully) a few months off still.

Of course, now that I’m finished with the C25K program, I need to decide what my new goals will be. I’m not sure if I want to work on speed or distance, so it’ll probably be a mix of both. 10K by next summer seems like a reasonable goal!
